Lorikeets have a brush-like tongue, also called a brush tongue, and a specialized digestive system adapted to consuming nectar, pollen and berries. They obtain energy from the simple sugars in nectar (e.g. sucrose, glucose, fructose), while pollen provides protein and other essential nutrients.
Understanding the unique digestion of Lorikeets & Lorys
lactose free
no added bakery products
Lorikeets have a simple digestive tract and consume easily digestible foods, resulting in their naturally “liquid” droppings. Due to the low fiber content and high moisture content of their natural diet, they must consume large quantities to meet their energy needs. This leads to correspondingly short “transit times” of food in the gastrointestinal tract and large amounts of feces are produced. Because of the high moisture content of the feed, the feces also contain a lot of moisture. The lorikeets have therefore developed a very powerful method of expelling their feces, which is intended to prevent contamination of their feathers.

Feeding instructions
Lorikeets eat about 10-15% of their body weight (dry weight).
Mix with warm water until desired consistency. We recommend a ratio of 1:4. Always ensure that fresh drinking water is available at all times. When it is warm outside (above 20 degrees Celsius) renew our lori nectar twice a day. Likewise, remove contaminated or uneaten food every day. Birds kept in captivity tend to eat too much. Therefore, feed according to body weight and based on the following table (values given in the table are guidelines and may vary depending on the housing temperature, maintenance and breeding time).
Breeding of lorikeets & lorys:
Increase the amount of nectar by up to 50% and supplement it with our moist egg food if necessary (protein boost). Tip from Australia: Many lorikeets like to eat vegetables and its over there a valuable part of their feeding, especially during the breeding season.
